When you’re dealing with fibromyalgia, sometimes just getting out of bed can be a chore. Looking at a long laundry list of things you need to do to get better can be overwhelming, which often leads to doing nothing.
Early on in my diagnosis when I was spending most of my day sitting in bed, I decided if I was ever going to get out of that bed I was going to have to do something, no matter how hard it was. My “one thing” philosophy was born. I would set a goal to do just one thing – cooking dinner, doing a load of laundry, sweeping the floor, whatever… Eventually doing that one thing turned into being able to do two or three things, and so on.
We can all use this philosophy for any area we want to change or improve in our lives whether we have health challenges or not. We don’t have to try to do everything at once. We can change one thing at a time. It may take a while to get there, but it’s much better than trying to do too much and just giving up. I saw that “all or nothing” philosophy fail too many times when I was working as a Personal Trainer and Health Coach. People tried to change too much at once because they wanted quick results, and when they couldn’t sustain all these changes, they would give up on all of them.
My “one thing” right now is in the Healthy Diet realm. I need to increase the number of servings of fruits and veggies I eat each day. It’s not that hard to get enough fruits and vegetables if you plan your meals, but frankly, there are days that I just don’t feel like preparing what I had planned, and I catch myself reaching for something that’s just quick and easy.
Enter the green smoothie… I can get three servings of fruits and vegetables in one (surprisingly) yummy drink, and because it’s a smoothie instead of juice, I get all the benefits of the whole fruit/vegetable, with all its good-for-you fiber. It’s also quick easy to make. So a green smoothie each day is my “one thing” for this month. What’s yours?
