My Trip To Cinn City: Finding Balance With Fibromyalgia

My hubby and I went to Cinn City this morning. No, not sin city, as in slot machines and shows, but Cinn City, a little piece of heaven on earth. It’s a place that specializes in cinnamon rolls and beignets.

Cinnamon Roll Choices

I had torn out an article about them back in December and while cleaning my desk (yes, this desk thing is a never-ending cycle with me) this week, I came across it again. I suggested to my dear hubby that we give them a try this morning.

This, along with coffee, is what we had for breakfast this morning:

I know some of my Fibro friends would be appalled. All that gluten and sugar just can’t be good for my fibromyalgia, could it?

I guess it depends on how you look at it.

No, it’s not anywhere near anything that could be considered healthy, and it’s definitely not something I would eat routinely.

In fact, just a year ago, I wouldn’t have even thought of going in a place like this because six years ago I went completely gluten-free in an effort to manage my fibromyalgia symptoms. I’m still ‘mostly’ gluten-free, but over the last few months I’ve started loosening some of the restrictions I’ve placed on myself, including with my diet.

Being strict with my routine and diet were absolutely essential initially. It allowed me to find things that worked to help with my pain and fatigue, and helped calm my nervous system.

The only problem is that although I physically felt better, I wasn’t getting a whole lot of enjoyment from my life. I had a decision to make — Do I stay on a strict regimen that prevents pain but restricts my enjoyment of life, or do I start to take some small chances and see what happens?

For me, being able to get out and enjoy life, make memories with my family, and serve in some small part in my church is more important than staying completely pain-free at this point. I’m not saying I want to hurt; trust me, I still do as much as I can to reduce my risks of flares, and I have to make a lot of choices between “good” and “best” as far as what activities I’m going to do and which ones I have to let go, but I’m not getting any younger and I want to enjoy the rest of the time I have left here on earth.

Sometimes that means throwing caution to the wind and eating that cinnamon roll, or having some fun little adventure, or enjoying some new experience. Sometimes it means deciding that the fun we might have is worth the discomfort I know I’ll experience later. I can always help mitigate the impact by pre-planning a recovery day to allow my body to recuperate.

Finding balance between what works the best for symptom control and being able to actually get some enjoyment out of life can be tricky. It’s kind of a two-edged sword because if you can’t decrease your pain levels, fatigue, etc. you don’t feel any sense of enjoyment, but if you have to be so strict with your self-care regimen that you feel you don’t ever do anything fun anymore, you’re not really enjoying life either.

Sometimes that balance comes in just realizing that there are a lot of little things that can give us enjoyment, cultivating an attitude of gratitude, and learning new ways to approach things. It doesn’t always have to involve a big shift or a big step outside our comfort zone. In fact, just stretching it a little can provide big benefits, especially if we’re still figuring out what works for us.

Finding this balance is very personal, and will look different for each of us. We each have to figure out what works best for us.

In my case, going out and having that delicious cinnamon roll and cup of decaf with my hubby was just one of those little things that make life fun for me. It wasn’t so much about the food as much as it was having some time to enjoy my husband’s company and experience a new place with him.

It’s one of those ‘small’ things that brought enjoyment, and although I may pay the price for eating something I don’t typically eat, it was absolutely worth it!

  1. Terri, good for you! Those rolls look delicious! Balance is needed. Find a little heaven on earth! Of course, we don’t do anything intentionally to make ourselves hurt. I don’t believe the cinnamon roll wants us to hurt either. Balance. I just take time to enjoy! It can be food, an outing, a TV show… whatever I am able to do I am present at that moment. I make homemade butterscotch rolls almost every Sunday… shhh! 🙂

    1. Oh Kim, my husband would love those butterscotch rolls! He’s a huge fan of butterscotch in almost anything. Thanks so much for your comment – like you I think finding joy in whatever we can do at the moment is so important. Finding balance means different things for different people too. What might be worth some extra discomfort for me might not be worth it for someone else, and vice versa. You guys already know how much I love food though….😂 Have a wonderful weekend!

  2. Those look amazing! I will never be able to eat wheat or gluten again (severe reaction), but I have started to reintroduce some dairy, mostly cheese. For years leading up to my illness, I was vegan, but once I had to depend on others to cook for me, I softened on that too. Now I eat fish and chicken and occasionally pork. Thinking about introducing beef also. I have never let go of chocolate, for as you say, we need some indulgence that brings us joy.

    1. Thanks V.J.! They really were delicious, even though I didn’t eat all of mine. My husband was willing to make the sacrifice of finishing it for me though….😁 I’m sorry you have such a severe reaction to the wheat and gluten. I know how careful you have to be when you absolutely can’t eat it.Have you found a big difference between when you were vegan and eating some animal protein. We are trying to eat more plant-based meals. We mostly eat chicken and fish also. I’m glad you’re able to enjoy your chocolate! Hope you have a wonderful weekend!

      1. In the beginning, removing meat from my diet , and dairy, made a big difference in terms of pain. But like many things, it only goes so far. I felt good about myself when I was following a healthy diet, but I can’t say it made a difference as I still slid downwards. I am still careful – aware of when I’ve gone overboard – try to listen to my body.

      2. Thanks V.J.. I was just wondering…. I went on an elimination diet when I first started getting so sick, then started adding things back in, all except gluten. I think, if nothing else, it helped me to feel I was doing something toward feeling better. I do feel better when I’m eating healthier overall. I’ve just never been an all-or-nothing person, unless it’s something that’s necessary, so when I can just enjoy myself, whether it’s doing something I might not usually do or eating something I don’t eat routinely, I take advantage of it.😁 Like you, though, I’m still careful about everything, and if I do splurge, it’s only in small doses. I didn’t even eat all of that delicious cinnamon roll yesterday. Hope you’re having a great day!

  3. Excellent post, Terri. I completely agree and I’ve followed a similar trajectory, going from super strict to learning to find that balance. I don’t know about you, but for me that changes all the time which makes it tricky so I tend to err on the side of caution. But we have to allow ourselves the small indulgences sometimes, for sure! 💕 Amanda

  4. They do look amazing! Personally, the reaction I would have to that would simply not be worth it, no matter how good it tastes, but good on you! I sometimes need to have an indulgence day too. Whether that’s Danish butter cookies, or a piece of chocolate cake, sometimes, the sugar or the dairy (never gluten for me) is worth the minor flare of symptoms.

    1. Yeah, gluten is really tricky, isn’t it? For some people the reaction is just so severe they don’t dare eat it. I can’t really establish a cause and effect relationship with gluten and how I feel, but I’ve avoided it for years just to be on the safe side. Finding what works for each of us is the key, I think.   5. The balance between strictness for possible health benefit, and relaxing the self-imposed rules a little for enjoyment. I’d go for a little towards the enjoyment side of things, because that’s all part of living your best life with illness. And as you say, it’s worth it and it can be managed/mitigated, such as with a pre-planned recovery day, or whatever you need to make sure the rest of your needs are met and your body isn’t thrown out of whack too much. Cinn City, what a brilliant name! I think it’s great you both went out and had a good time! =]

For me, being able to get out and do those things I enjoy make the difference between thriving and just surviving…. I think everyone has to decide for themselves where the balance lies. I really had (necessarily at the beginning) severely restricted myself, but I just know I can’t be so regimented for the rest of my life if I want to actually enjoy it, so I’m learning to stretch my comfort zone a little at a time and loosen up.   7. You are so right, for me day to day I try to eat very healthily but if we go out somewhere I eat whatever I fancy on the menu because I want to enjoy life and where I live gluten free and stuff like that is hard to find. I am glad you had a lovely cake I mean it looks yummy!

For me, more than the food, it’s just the experience of being able to go to some of those neat places that I had completely steered clear of for so many years and enjoy myself.😊 By the way, that was probably the best cinnamon roll I’ve ever eaten.     1. Yikes! I don’t know if I’d chance it if I was going to have to take Benadryl afterwards…. 😊It really was delicious, but not something I’d eat often. I like to eat healthy most of the time, but since I don’t have a serious issue with the gluten occasionally, I figured it would be a nice little treat. Hope your week is off to a great start!
