WW Question – Healthy Go-To Meals

Happy Wednesday! Can you believe how fast this year is flying by??? My Mom used to tell me that older you get, the faster time goes. I’m starting to believe it. As always for Wellness Wednesday, I have a question for us to ask ourselves. These questions are to help us start to think about the small things we can do to positively impact our wellness.

On Monday, I talked about trying Hello Fresh. One of the things I liked was that I didn’t have to plan what to cook for three nights of the week. I don’t know why, but the person who used to be able to plan delicious, healthy meals on the fly now seems to have left my body.

So anyway, Hello Fresh took away the need to plan some of our meals, but what about the other four days of dinners? And lunches? And those nights we just don’t feel like cooking? Those are the times it’s really easy to just pick up the phone and order takeout.

Of course, the choices we have for takeout aren’t always the healthiest. And I don’t know about you, but I tend to be a little more lax with the nutrition when someone else is doing the cooking.

That’s why it’s so important to have some quick and easy go-to meals. You know the ones I mean – things that we can throw together to make a meal when we haven’t planned our meals or when we don’t feel like cooking.

We talked about having a well-stocked pantry and fridge in Making Your Quarantine Foods A Little Healthier. Having your go-to meals in mind when you stock up can help ensure you have the things you need for some healthy meals.

For instance, I keep chicken breasts in the freezer, salad fixings in the fridge, and quinoa and brown rice in the pantry. On Mondays, I usually cook a package of chicken breasts in the crockpot to have ready for some quick meals. If I’m feeling really industrious, I’ll cook some quinoa and brown rice also. With just these few things, I can fix salads, grain bowls, sandwiches, and and even fried rice really quickly.

This week, let’s start building our lists of healthy go-to meals. Let’s ask ourselves:

Having those meals that don’t require a lot of prep and are quick to cook can really help us eat more healthfully.

Do you have some go-to meals for those days when you haven’t planned your meals or don’t feel like cooking? Please share!

Blessings,

~Terri

  1. Go to meals at home really help keep me from stopping at fast food. I like your idea for having chicken ready for the week. So many easy options with chicken already cooked and waiting for us. Now that we are empty nesters when we make waffles, we freeze the extra and can have those for dinner. We like breakfast for dinner too. Seems easy to cook French toast, or eggs.

    1. Thanks so much for sharing Sarah! We like to have breakfast for dinner too sometimes, especially in the winter. It’s always nice to have some things you can just throw together quickly, isn’t it? Sending love and hugs your way!

  2. I roast a chicken, then use the left overs for homemade tacos (I make my own gluten free, low carb tacos with almond flour) with fresh diced tomatoes, sliced lettuce & grated cheese, Quick, easy & nutritious.

  3. Good thinking, Terri. I’d be interested to read what others do for these sorts of quicker, at-hand meals. I admit I’m not great in this area, often plumping for snacks like yoghurts, fruit, low fat crisps and cereal in the evenings instead of a proper meal. I do like to have all these snacky-foods on hand, but if I can manage more then I might get fresh chicken (that has a few days on the use-by date usually, ready to eat cold or warmed up) that I can add to something like rice and veggies, or to add to a frozen meal for convenience if really pushed like a chicken Tikka, then add in some peas. xx

    1. Thanks so much for sharing Caz! Having easy-to-fix things on hand really can make a difference. I hope more people will share what their go-to’s are so we can all get ideas from one another. Have a wonderful weekend! Hugs!
